The Health Benefits of Swimming

posted in: Blog | 0

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise, and with all the hot weather we’ve been having, it’s also a great way to relax and cool off.

Swimming has so many proven health benefits, and because it’s low impact, it’s especially well-suited to those who have musculoskeletal pain.

Here’s how regular swimming can significantly improve health:

  • Arthritis – regular swimming can reduce symptoms and build muscle strength.
  • Heart health – swimming on a regular basis can improve cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Lung function – regular swimming has been found to improve lung strength and capacity, and may help people with chronic lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD.
  • Overweight – being overweight can put pressure on the joints, but the buoyancy of water makes swimming a great option for burning calories.
  • Pregnancy – Exercising in the water can help reduce the discomfort of pregnancy without stressing joints.
  • Aging – Besides being low-impact and heart-healthy, regular swimming can have a positive effect on bone health – especially important for perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.

If swimming is not for you, you may consider other forms of water exercise.  Even water walking can be beneficial, and many gyms and health clubs offer water aerobics classes.

NOTE: As with any exercise program, consult with your doctor before starting a swimming (or water exercise) program.  If you’re not a strong swimmer, consider taking lessons.  Never go swimming alone, make sure a lifeguard is present, and steer clear of ponds with algae.
